Machado De Assis, the Brazilian writer is considered the most important of Latin American literature of romanticism. He was born on June 21, 1839 in Rio de Janeiro. His father wanted him to study law and so he was sent to study in France. While there he began to write poetry and short stories which were published in magazines. He returned to Brazil in 1866 after his father died and started working as a journalist for O Rebate where he reviewed books, plays and literary works. According to Machado de Assis, "the best literature must seem truth", therefore his works portrayed human nature with all its vices and virtues without preaches or moral lessons. He wanted to describe reality through its details. His best works are Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, Quincas Borba, Dom Casmurro, Esaú e Jacó. The short novel "A Mão e Luva" or "A Mão" is considered his best work. Machado de Assis loved the theater and even worked as a playwright for a while. He usually wrote in partnership with other authors under the name of Laemmert & Cia. The partnership was dissolved in 1885, but his work remained highly praised by other journalists and critics of his time. cfa1e77820
